about

“Purple Rose” is a concept album about love, films, and love of films. Its title comes from “The Purple Rose of Cairo,” a funny-sad movie about a woman who falls in love with a movie character after he jumps from the screen into the real world.

Each song is loosely inspired by a different film director. Some reference the directors or their work directly. “Tim Burton,” for example, is about a guy who impersonates the real Tim Burton to impress women, and “M. Night Shyamalan” is a twisting love story with a couple of references to The Sixth Sense.

Other songs are sung from the perspective of the director. “Uwe Boll,” for example, is a song about what I imagined it would be like to have notoriously awful director Uwe Boll as an ex-boyfriend.

Finally, some songs go for the “feel” of the director without making any explicit references. Andrew Bujalski is famous for low-budget movies with improvised-sounding dialogue, so the lyrics to that song were about 70% improvised in one take. Shane Carruth is most famous for the time-travel-gone-wrong film Primer, so his song is an instrumental full of malfunctioning loops. Then of course, there’s “Hayao Miyazaki/Isao Takahata,” which is a rock adaptation of one of the songs that the forest sprites in my backyard taught me, back when I was a young Japanese girl.

If this all sounds like you need a film degree to follow along, it was never intended that way. In most cases, the thought process behind each song wasn’t more complicated than “This synth sounds like Frankenstein. Let’s Google who directed Frankenstein…” And my hope is that, even if, for example, you didn’t know that Joss Whedon is a fantasy/sci-fi director with a soft spot for Broadway musicals, you’d still get that there was something “cinematic” about all the songs.
